WORKERS BEHIND THE DESIGN YARD

WORKERS BEHIND THE DESIGN YARD

Workers Behind the Design Yard is a project about people working behind the scenes, to beautify the house of God; the creativity, and the tremendous amount of work done.

The project reveals the different design patterns and decorations that grace altars Nigerian churches by looking at the processes in their design, production, and the people involved. In this series of images, set in the Redeemed Christian Fellowship, University of Lagos (RCF Unilag), and shows students – some of whom are volunteers and some of whom have been selected as workers – with the responsibility of preparing the church altar for Sunday services. Referred to as the Decoration Unit, decor workers call one another by prefix-names; by adding “Wise-” to their first names. A biblical reference to the wisdom of designers.
The series’ title is a nod to the parable of the worker in the vineyard, in Matthew 20:1-16. The designs make use of colour and symbolism to reflect the mood or theme of worship for every Sunday, where red represents the blood of Jesus or its healing power, green referencing harvest, treble clef; denoting Praise Service — as the decoration unit interprete themes for different Sunday services.
